Dearwood is a boutique Sydney-based wallpaper design house, with designer Vicki Meintjes at its heart. We design and screenprint our wallpaper locally in Sydney, as craftsmen work up and down 30 metre tables, screen by screen. Papers are then carefully dried, packaged, and sent to you. The beauty of screenprinted wallpaper is that it is not mass-produced, and has a more textural feel than digitally printed products.

The Path travelled…
Vicki’s travels as a designer took an unexpected turn into wallpaper, after a restaurateur commissioned her to design a wallpaper for his tapas bar. Up until then, Vicki’s intricately designed japanese-style gift boxes/bags were being stocked nationally in David Jones and other retailers as ‘Mamoko’. But it was the process of designing for the restaurateur’s wall that captured Vicki’s imagination, Dearwood was born, and then it became all about wallpaper. Vicki’s drive to push the boundaries and create can be seen in the Waves design, which she hand-drew to scale on large sheets of paper pinned on her living room wall. Vicki draws inspiration from the natural and built environment, travels, and good architecture and design.

Industry + Sustainability
We are about total commitment to supporting local industry and long-term environmental sustainability. For this reason, our designs are printed locally by hand, drawing on the strengths of our local industry counterparts. This eliminates the need for managing the production offshore, therefore reducing the overall number of steps (and energy use) involved in achieving the finished product. Screenprinting also means we can eliminate the use of printer wastage by-products and chemicals used in the digital printing process.

100% Recyclable
We use water-based pigment inks, and our non-woven Optiwall paper sourced within Australia is manufactured using a unique liquid coating, which removes the need for non-recyclable laminated metallised polyester films. It is 100% recyclable at a paper mill, and the need for solvents is eliminated, minimising the impact on the environment. It is by far more durable, sturdy and easy to hang, walls may be pasted directly, a wallpaper hanger’s dream.

Fire Tested
Our wallpaper has been fire tested by the AWTA Product Testing division in line with the Building Code of Australia requirements, with superior results.

Bespoke
Designing for us is pure pleasure and we’ll see the smallest of concepts translated into the most original and aesthetic design.
